XP SP2 Installation hangs

I'm overwhelmed and in dire need of assistance. I just
received the XP SP2 disk and attempted to install. The
setup gets as far as "Backing up registry" and hangs.
When I realized that it could take as long as two hours,
I let it run overnight. This morning it was still hung.
Any idea what I can do to complete the installation??
 
Did you run the UpgardeAdvisor and 'fix' any incompatibilities?

Did you turn off your virus scanner, firewall, spy sweeper, peripherals,
etc. Also, do not be connected to the web.
 
Firewall was disabled.
Virus scan disabled.
Updated BIOS downloaded from manufacture.
No internet connection.

Never heard of 'Upgrade Advisor'.I'll try again tonight.
