XP Updates - hangs

Hi,

I posted earlier about installing SP2, then loading the updates but them
hanging instead of installing. I checked all the drivers (no, it wasnt them)
and I left the machine overnight last night to see if I was being hasty, but
whaddya know 16 hours later and the update still hasnt been installed and a
reboot is the only thing to get it going again.

So this morning I see that there is another critical update 4.x Mb to
correct "issues" with the last update not installing correctly. Ah, so its
not me, but a dodgy update. So I duly download the new update and, yes, same
problem.... the sod hangs - 3 hours later its still "initialising
installation..."

So whats going on Microsoft? This has cost me 3 days work already so a
little direct contact would be good.

First make sure that you are clean of viruses and spywares -
If you have any Norton crap on your computer,
uninstall All of it and then check in services.msc
(Start > Run > services.msc) to make sure that all
Norton crap services that may be left behind are disabled -
Then try the Windows Update site again -

By the way, this newsgroup is not a direct contact to Microsoft

Thanks XPUser,

Did that before installing sp2

Norton *crap*? Thats a bit rich when we're discussing Microsoft. I dont
recall ever taking 3 days to sort out any Norton issues - 3 days is actually
a lot of $ to me. I'm having trouble installing a crappy fix update to an
even crappier critical update issued by Microsoft, so maybe you should put
the slurs where they are deserved.
Then try the Windows Update site again -

Well maybe they should. I'm a designer, one of the few that chooses
Microsoft over Mac, and to be frank I am beginning to wonder why.

Thanks for your suggestions anyway.

Gee, I have never ever had any problems with the
Windows Update site or any Windows Updates.
Also I have never installed any Norton crap.
Apparently you have and you are.

Gee, with that kind of knowledge and logic you should call yourself XPEXPERT
not XPUSER.

Thanks, but Microsoft issued another fix to rectify their corrupt update so
all is well now. Golly, seems it wasnt Norton after all so lucky I didnt go
through your recommended process of uninstalling Norton. Seems I can spot a
big mouth know-nothing from miles away.

Maybe you can move on and help someone else with your *vast* knowledge,
XPTWIT.

I am glad all worked out for you after all -
Like I said though, I NEVER got stuck with the issues
you have had with the Windows Update site and I
have installed EVERY single update that has been
offered at the Windows Update site -
excluding driver updates which I have always declined
and which Microsoft finally wised up and stopped offering-
You want a driver update?
Check with your system or device manufacturer!

All day long I deal with people that are having
Internet Connection issues - LAN connection issues -
Windows Update issues - etc.

Guess what a great lot of them have in common?
Norton in one form or another, that's what.
And guess what very often proves to be the cause of the issue?
Norton.

As far as I am concerned,
Norton = Crap

Try checking out System Configuration Utility -
(msconfig)
Go to the Services tab and put a check in
"Hide all Microsoft Services"
Check out all of the ridiculous bloat of Symantec Services -
Check out the Startup tab - More ridiculous Symantec bloat -

With that said, I know that Microsoft has plenty of "crap" qualities too -
Otherwise, why the need for the myriad updates and Service Packs?

Hugs right back at ya...
Hope you have fun with your Norton...

I'll stick with my ZoneAlarm Security Suite version 5.5.062.004
It loads just 2 Non Microsoft Services and 1 Startup item -
