XP SP2 install problem

Hi all,

Got an PC with XP SP2 on it. The old hard drive inside was failing so
purchased new Hitachi Deskstar and use Ghost to clone old disk to new. This
kept failing on the first boot with a Stop 0x00000024 error.

The original disk then died so had to then reinstall XP onto new drive. I
used the Hitachi utils to do a low level format. Installed XP Pro Gold with
no problems, all hardware found. I then installed SP2 (full download - not
from Windows Update) and had the same error (0x00000024).

Tried every step of this article http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=228888
but no joy.

Uninstalled SP2 via safe mode and installed all patches offered by Windows
update and then SP1 then all patches offered again then SP2 and falls over
in exactly the same place.

Tried all of this with Grisoft Free antivirus and without.
Tried with HD in as master and slave in primary and secondary.
Removed all components and reseated
Ran PC with base components only (HD, MB, single stick memory, onboard
graphic card)
Took out all memory and tried with different memory from another PC.

I'm on my 8th damn format of the machine in every combination of hardware I
can think of and still always fails with the 0x00000024 stop error after
installing SP2.

Anyone got an idea of what to try now?

Did you ever consider contacting (or visiting) the manufacturer of the
computer and seeing if there is a needed update (firmware/bios/etc) for SP2?

Run fsutil dirty query c: from cmd
If it comes back: "Volume - c: is Dirty", Then you must run Chkdsk /f
/r to detect and resolve any file system structural corruption. You
must restart the system before the disk scan begins on a system
partition.
I would also order Windows XP SP2 CD from Microsoft. If you did
everything correctly as you say, that is the only unknown quantity in
your mix. That and the fact that the new drive could be hosed.

Tobie Fysh:
Don't really know what "XP Pro Gold" is, but we'll assume it's a viable
version of X:p Pro. And you did say you subsequently installed SP2. And
we'll further assume the HD is mechanically/electronically non-defective and
you've checked it out with the Hitachi DFT utility, right?

It's a miserable error message all right since there can be a host of
reasons causing the problem. Anything at
http://www.microsoft.com/resources/...Windows/XP/all/reskit/en-us/prmd_stp_swhw.asp
that might help?

Or here?
http://groups.google.com/groups?q=0...0x00000024+stop+error+windows+xp+installation

Don't know what really else to suggest. You seem to be taking the right
steps. Good luck and if (I should say "when") you resolve the problem, keep
us informed of the cause & solution.

Hi Shenan,

Yep - BIOS at the latest version and all drivers tried have been MS
certified.

Hi Mungo,

Already done chkdsk as per http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=228888

Also the SP2 CD is ordered straight from MS. Also got a full download of
WindowsXP-KB835935-SP2-ENU.exe both of which give the same errors.

The Hitachi utils give the drive a clean bill of health.

Hi Anna,

The version of XP is shrink wrapped from first day of issue (so pre SR1).

All the utils from Hitachi say the disk is running fine with no bad blocks
or mechanical defects.

Tried the solutions from
http://www.microsoft.com/resources/...Windows/XP/all/reskit/en-us/prmd_stp_swhw.asp
with no joy (its basically the same as
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=228888 ).

Also been through the newsgroups which basically seem to be rehashing the
above MS articles anyway :-(

Thanks anyway.

Regards
Tobie
