Hi

I'm trying to perform an install XP SP2 to a test machine using a GPO. I
believe I have done everything correctly but it fails to install on the
machine.

In the eventlog on the machine I have an error that I can find very little
information on.

Event ID 11721
Description:
Product: Windows XP Service Pack 2 (1033) -- Error 1721. There is a problem
with this Windows Installer package. A program required for this install to
complete could not be run. Contact your support personnel or package vendor.
Action: AdminRunSetupMin, location: \\pc-200\XPSP2\i386\update\Update.exe,
command: /q /z /msi

Can anyone shed any light on this for me?

TIA
KIWI

Further to this I do not have a problem if I logon as administrator and
manually launch update.exe from the share with the switches /q /z /msi

The issue only occurs when deployed via the GPO.

Further info:

When I enable installer logging I get the following in the log file:

program required for this install to complete could not be run. Contact your
support personnel or package vendor. Action: AdminRunSetupMin, location:
\\pc-200\XPSP2\i386\update\Update.exe, command: /q /z /msi
Action ended 18:32:01: InstallFinalize. Return value 3.
Action 18:32:01: Rollback. Rolling back action:
Action ended 18:32:01: INSTALL. Return value 3.

I'm guessing the installation failed because of this last line...but it has
me baffled. Why would I be being prompted for the Windows XP Service Pack
disk when that is what I'm trying to install?????

If anyone is interested....I figured it out.

It was due to the file permissions on the share. I had Domain Admins -
Full Control and Domain Computers - Read. Changed the latter to FC as well
and it worked....

It's a pity the message is not a little more descriptive or accurate.

Hope someone finds this useful.
