XP SP1 refuses to standby / hibernate

Hi all
I recently purchased and installed an ASUS AX4SPE Max II motherboard to replace my MSI NEO 845P. Since I installed the board and did the oblgatory XP rebuild, the system refuses to standby / hibernate no matter what standby / hibernate time I give it. I have ranged fro 10 mins to 3 hours and still no luck

Obviously the problem lies with the motherboard but I was wondering
1) Has anyone else had this problem
2) What is the difference between S1 and S3 standby

Thanks for any replies
