XP SP 2 version #

I am troubleshooting a system lock up issue on an ASUS mobo. Their tech
support says: "i found your SP2 is a 2158 version RTM , it is not the final
version , the final version is 2180 TRM, you can download it here to test :

http://sc.mydrivers.com/others/WindowsXP-KB835935-SP2-ENU.exe "

Can someone shed light on why I would be told to wipe my drive and install
this?
the KB states: "Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) Checked Build is a
separate version of SP2 and should not be installed in addition to the SP2
Web download or the SP2 CD.
The Checked Build is a compiled set of files that include debugging
information, providing administrators with specific details about program
functioning. The Checked Build files are not required for proper operation of
your computer."

So far as I can tell, I have the RTM version, which I installed from the
shipped CD.

A clean install might be a Good Idea, but is this version going to buy me
much?

FAQ: Build 2158?
Q: When I look at winver on my system the version number reads as 'Build 2600.xpsp_sp2_rtm.040803-2158 (Service Pack 2)', I thought 2180 was the final build? Do I have the final version?

A: Yes, 2180 is the final version and if your version stamp reads the same as I have put above you do have the final version installed. The build number of a service pack is only displayed in winver and system properties on a beta or release candidate version. The confusion for Service Pack 2 comes because its compile time stamp is now the only thing visible and that's 21:58/9:58PM, which can make it look like build 2158. When broken down the version stamp means: OS is Build 2600 (Windows XP) with Service Pack 2 Release to Manfacturer level, compiled on the 3rd August 2004 at 9:58PM

You have the latest version and you definitely do not want to install a checked/debug version.

Thanks for the confirmation. I did not know that the 2158 was a time code,
but I did believe that standard MS practice is that RTM is final, with
updates being separate. I may yet do a "flush and refill", but I'll still
use the SP2 CD. There's more than enough for me to play with in the "Tools"
folder. Thanks.

2158, whether checked or not, was an intermediate development build, and
the final will not install over it. Those who got it legitimately were
told *not* to use it on a production system. Also I don't think the
final non-checked would install over any checked build, even one of the
Release Candidate 'Preview' ones where it was otherwise allowed.

OK. I can accept that. Now my question is, is the 2158 in the referenced
string a time code or the build number. I thought RTM meant final release.

Thanks for the tie-breaking vote. I know that patches come and go, but
usually an OS or SP release stays the same once it "goes gold" and is given
the RTM label. If someone else wants to weigh in and say that you can have
an ID string containing the RTM designation and yet still be preliminary, I
think we'd all like to know...

Bill was right if the description you see in WinVer is as he gave it. I
thought that when you said a Tech had told you that you had build 2158
the Tech knew what he was talking about. So Start - Run - Winver, and
if that is as Bill described you have the final SP2 installed. In which
case find some other Tech if you can
