XP "shuts down" OK, but hangs on "restart"

I've got a new Compaq Presario (SR1010NX), and I noticed that the system
hangs after installing updates.

I played around a little and I discovered that if I "turn off" the computer,
it will power-down just fine.

HOWEVER, if I choose "Restart", the system hangs at the "Windows is shutting
down" screen. I tested it a little, and from the time the "Windows is
shutting down" screen comes on, the cursor/mouse will stay active for about
10-15 seconds, then it locks up.

Any ideas about what could be happening? I tried disconnecting all
peripherals except the monitor, mouse and keyboard, and it still happens.

you are not the only one with this problems, it seems anyone that has a amd
64 bit chip is having this problem. i have a hp pavilion a530 with amd 3200
64 bit and had same problem, after spending 2 hours on phone with hp they had
me uninstall sp2. if you search this group you will find a link to a page
that tells about the problem
