XP ShutDown

Hi all - this isn't the same as the other guy who's
screen simply would freeze. Sorry if this HAS come up
before, but 627 pages of problems was a little too much
to wade through, even for me!

Anyway, I use Windows XP Professional Edition, and when I
do the whole Start > Turn Off Computer thing, I
press "Turn Off" and the screen flickers like it's about
to...then my computer makes a sort of grinding
noise...and then nothing. So I do it again, and sometimes
it does shut down this time, but sometimes still nothing.
The third time is always lucky and it always shuts down,
but for some reason it is taking me 3 attempts to do so.

I cannot think of anything I have installed or edited
which would affect this process, mainly because I don't
do too much downloading except for .mrc files, oh, and of
course Windows Update files!

Thanks for the help.

Regards,

Chris W.
