XP setup does not see hard drive

I am trying to reinstall windows XP after replacing a crashed HD but when I
get to the part where it wants to know what partition to install it on, my
hard drive is not listed. Only my CD drive.
My bios acknowledges the new hard drive just fine, WD 80gig. It is set for
first boot and cd second boot. Anyone seen this before?
thanks in advance,
ed

Older SATA?
Some other controller card?
Chosen to press F6 to install the controller driver during the first part of
booting from CD?

It is a plain old ide, set as master only HD on the primary IDE controller.
My CDROM is on the secondary IDE controller. Both on motherboard. I hadn't
tried the F6 because I did not think it applied, but hey. I'll try anything.
thanks.

During the initialization you need to partition and format the new drive
before it will be recognized for installation.

You have that option after booting the install CD
