I have recently attempted to install XP Service pack 2, twice.
On each occasion the installation process went without ant problem to the
final “Finish†click.
On rebooting the PC gets to the XP splash screen but does not go on to load
windowsand the result is a black screen – no action taking place.
The system was brought back to normal by opening windows in “Safe Mode†and
using the option to restore from a restore point.
During the installation process the files were extracted to
c:\70c971a392a52b5569 (79.4 mb) which is still on the machine. The
uninstall file “$nt servicepackuninstall$†is present
(302mb).
Service pack 2 is not on the “ Add / Remove “ list and a check of the system
shows that Service pack 1 is current.
The disc used to load has been used successfully by two other persons
without any problems.
The free space on my disc has reduced by over 2GB following these two
attempts.
How to fix please, both service pack 2 and recovery of disc space.
Many thanks
Ron Bowes.
