XP service pack 2 security alerts won't go away

I turned off & disabled the security service in the 'services' area under
computer management.
It worked for 1 day, now the alerts have come back, even though the service
says it is disabled and stopped. I even went to the security settings in the
control panel to see what they looked like, and that option (change the way
security center alerts me) is not even available - any other ideas? Many
thanks, Jody McClain

I tried the registry method too, but it still didn't work. I think I have
discovered the real problem, although I still don't know how to fix it.
Here's the deal: this is happening on a server that i look at via 'remote
desktop'. when i look at it using remote desktop, i get the alerts. when i
connect a monitor, mouse & keyboard directly to the server, i don't get the
alerts. doe sthat shed any light on how to fix this? i need to continue the
present set-up, that is, accessing the server via 'remote desktop'. thanks
again for your help!

Out of ideas of this one. Keep searching, there'll be an answer somewhere.
