Windows Security Center Info

H

heweaver

I just got a new computer with Windows XP Media Center edition. It
also came pre-installed with Mcafee Security Center / antivirus /
spyware protection / whatever. Due to enourmous problems I had which
apparantly came from Mcaffee being installed, I uninstalled it. (I had

a heck of a time doing that, but thats another story). I now use Avast

Antivirus and use Windows Firewall for the firewall. Everything (for
the most part) is working fine...

But here's my issue. If I disable the antivirus, then the security
alert comes up, but it says "Mcafee reports that it may be turned
off"...if I enable my av software, the alert goes away.

Same with windows firewall. If I disable it, the windows security
alert pops up but it reports that Mcafee Firewall may be disabled.

I just want everything Mcafee off, I would really like to know why the
windows security alerts are still referring to them as Mcafee...

Also, if I bring up the security center console while the AV is
disabled, it says "Windows has found multiple antivirus software on
this PC, and they are currently either disabled or out of date". I do
NOT have Mcafee installed anymore, it was completely removed (via the
add/remove programs section)... but its just odd that it thinks I have

multiple av software... is this some kind of registry key or
something?

Other than that, everything is working just great.

Thanks for any replies!

McAfee and Norton both are notorious for leaving "footprints" behind after you uninstall their products. Unless you had a "cleaning program" monitoring the install process the only way to remove all instances of McAfee is to go through the registry line by line and delete each instance you find. Dangerous and tedious at best. McAfee has utilities on their web site to remove each piece of there security center suite, when my suscription ran out and I switched to the "other brand" I used their utilities with fair results. Hope this helps.
