Tried dozens of times to get this to load but keep
getting "access denied" part way through the
installation. Tried all the suggestions offered by MS but
nothing seems to work. Do I really need it? Is it
possible I need to install this prior to any other
updates?

Any suggestions most welcome.

Thanks

BJ

And what has THAT got to do with anything? Registration is not compulsory
and not needed to install the SP...

Thanks for the tips but afraid no success yet.

I'm using bonafide registered windows XP home.

I deleted every windows update file except the history
file. Also tried the tips at kellys-korner but I'm afraid
I don't know where to start when it comes to deciphering
the registry. Used filemon and regmon and got lots of
failures (couldn't find file on the c: root but it has
previously found it and closed it). Don't know if this
is related to my problem. I re-installed XP (from
scratch) due to earlier problems and the first update I
tried was SP1. It wouldn't load. I did all the others and
came back to SP1 but again wouldn't load. Wondering if I
should start from scratch again.

One thing occurs - Original OS was 98 and I upgraded to
XP (with an upgrade copy). When I re-installed XP I half
expected it to knock me back and request the 98 security
key but it didn't. Could this have a bearing?
