MS .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1 Security Update Question

Optiker

I'm running MS Windows XP Home Edition, Ver 2002, SP3. My updater wants
to install MS .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1 Security Update for
Windows....

I've repeatedly tried selecting both automatic and custom, and both
methods try to install showing a popup "The updates are being installed"
window with progress bar, then after a bit of HD activity, that window
closes and I get a "Some updates could not be installed" window. Since
that's the only update trying to install, it's the one not installed.
The "updates available" icon remains in the system tray.

In uninstalling some programs using "add or remove programs" I notice
that it shows five MS .NET Framework entries: 1.1, 1.1 Hotfix, 2.0 SP2,
3.0 SP2 and 3.5 SP1. Only the 3.1 SP1 entry shows any last used date
information in the "add or remove program" entry, and the two 1.1
entries show no size information.

Questions:
(1) is this a legitimate update, or a malware attack of some kind?

(2) if legitimate, is it needed if 3.1 SP2 is apparently in place, and
if not needed, how do I get rid of the update message and icon in the
system tray?

(3) since the 2.0, 3.0 and 3.5 entries in the "add or remove software"
table size info shows 185 MB, 179 MB and 28.05 MB respectively, can I
uninstall any or all but one of these, and if so, do I keep 3.5 or a
different one?

Thanks very much for any assistance.

Maybe you could download the update to your
desktop from the following site and then install it
from there.

Each version of .NET Framework is separate.
The newer versions do not update the previous
ones. You only need this software when you are
running apps that require it.

The following article may help explain;

I have not personally experimented with determining what dot net versions
may be required for any particular set of applications. It is confusing.
One link that was recently posted in this newsgroup indicates that you may
need as many as five versions:
http://blogs.msdn.com/astebner/archive/2009/04/20/9557946.aspx, and explains
why you will always have 2.0 and 3.0 installed if you have 3.5 installed.

You can see in this picture, the relationship of 2,3,and 3.5. They're
building blocks, that stack on top of one another. You may need to keep
1.0 and 1.1, if you have applications that are looking for them.

You can compare to the Java diagram here.

Step #1 => Before doing anything else, write down the .NET Framework
versions which are already installed:

How to determine which versions of the .NET Framework are installed and
whether service packs have been applied
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/318785

Step #2 => Now see Resolution Method 2 in...

When you try to install an update for the .NET Framework 1.0, 1.1, 2.0, 3.0,
or 3.5, you may receive Windows Update error code "0x643" or Windows
Installer error code "1603" (ignore the title, if need be)
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923100

After running the appropriate/needed tool, (re)install all .NET Framework
versions manually using the download links on the page then run Windows
Update manually to install security updates for same.

NB: If you've removed .NET Framework 3.5 SP1, reinstalling it will also
install .Net Framework 2.0 SP2 and 3.0 SP2.

IMPORTANT! => If you've removed .NET Framework 3.5 SP1, reinstall your .NET
Framework versions in the following order:

1. .Net Framework 3.5 SP1, then...
2. .Net Framework 1.1, then...
3. .Net Framework 1.1 SP1

NB: KB923100 references this page:
http://blogs.msdn.com/astebner/archive/2006/05/30/611355.aspx. Please read
ALL of it as well as the related page
http://blogs.msdn.com/astebner/pages/8904493.aspx before using the .NET
Framework Cleanup Tool.

Step #3 => Check-in at Windows Update and install any critical security
updates offered.

John, Paul R, Paul and PA Bear...Thank y'all for your replies. That
probably answers all of the questions, and definitely gives me something
to work on. I will read the references you've provided, do what I can,
and if needed, be back with additional questions.
