XP Security turning off virus protection

W

woody

I am running windows XP home with SP2 and latest updates. I got a message
yesterday that my Norton 2005 virus definitions were out of date. Tried to
run updates manually and got no connection to host. Disabled ZA firewall
and same result. Ran spybot search and destroy and found windows security
had disabled antivirus. It fixed problem. Looked for host misdirects and
found none. Ran Norton on line virus scanner and nothing found. Tried many
things including reinstalling antivirus and talking to Symantec but no
luck.
Noticed when i go into windows security and enable virus protection and go
back it has disabled it.
Any ideas why this is happening??

Norton is junk? Try the Comprehensive Malware Removal Instructions on the
Detailed Malware Removal page of my website: www.stopmalware.tk once done
follow up with the Safety Tips page. Since Spybot Search & Destroy detected
some problems I'm assuming this is a malware related problem. Also, you
didn't provide information such as when and possibly why this problem
started occuring (Did it happen after installing a certain program/update or
visiting a certain website?). Please post back for further help if you need
any.

I would have found the problem if it were related to a software change I
had made. I run spy blaster, search and destroy and Zone alarm. I
disabled AZ firewall, scanned for Viruses and updated the definitions
from Major Geeks website. I also looked for hosts re directs and found
none. The problem is when Norton connects for an update it cannot
connect. I talked to Symantec and did several things which did not
resolve the problem.
Norton Products do have some issues but I have been using their antivirus
for a long time and it has no more problems than others despite the anti
Norton brigade who insist Norton is to blame for global warming and many
other things.
The issue for this group is why Windows XP turns off virus protection in
the windows security center. I have the windows firewall disabled and
automatic updates enabled in the XP security center and they don't
change, but when I enable the antivirus it is disabled when I open the
security center again. I scanned for malware and found none.

You and Elendil are wrong here.

What is happening with Norton I don't know and I can't be sure. ;-)
Windows XP SP2 has a Security center. This is a monitoring service and it has
no protections . When Norton is being installed it turns off this antivirus
monitoring by default because accourding to Symantec it is a self-protection
and there is no need of duplicate alerts. And this is not a problem.
Obviously there is a problem or problems with Nortona dn you no longer can
use it.

I suggest you :
Goto Add/Remove programs in Control Panel
and remove Norton
Restart
Again in Add/Remove programs , Now remove Symantec stuff
Restart
Now remove LiveUpdate
Restart

Goto C:\Program files
and manually delete all files/folders that are connected to Norton ,
Symantec , Live Update.

Then , disable System Restore
http://vil.nai.com/vil/SystemHelpDocs/DisableSysRestore.aspx

Turn System Restore ON again:
http://vil.nai.com/vil/SystemHelpDocs/DisableSysRestore.aspx

Now , goto Security Center in Control Panel and turn ON all alerts.
Make sure you have a firewall ,only 1 firewall (example ZoneAlarm) and then
visit my web-site:
http://pandaman.my.contact.bg

Perform correctly and systematically the malware removal instructions to
check and clean your PC !!!

If there is an infection , you'll be able to clean it. Then , get rid of
Norton and forget about it. Use another AV / AS software(s)

I suggest NOD32 . You can download a 30 day trial version.Also , read
carefully and learn more about it in ESET's official site

I was aware that windows security center does not give any antivirus
protection but wasn't sure about the status disable, as a malware program
showed this as a problem. My subscription is not invalid and I can
continue to use it without any problem by going to major geeks and
manually downloading the updates, thank you.
I do not listen to people who hang out in news groups trying to sell
software.
