Windows Security Aletrs vs. Virus Protection software

My most recent antivirus software is Norton Antivirus 2003. I wanted my
employer to buy a new version of an Antivirus software from a re-seller. I
was told that Microsoft Windows XP can protect against viruses. Can virus
protection=on in Windows Security Alters protect me? If so, how can I set it
to on?

If not, what other options do I have?

Windows XP does not contain a built-in antivirus program. The
Security Center simply monitors the status of any 3rd party
antivirus programs you may have installed. In other words, it
will only keep track of whether an AV program is installed and
updated.

You're right to be concerned about your current AV protection.
While you can still get updates from Symantec for this product,
the 2003 release is effectively obsolete.

If your employer is concerned about cost then they should
consider purchasing the software from a local retailer as
opposed to a reseller. Places such as Staples, OfficeMax,
Office Depot, BestBuy, Circuit City or CompUSA will often offer
the latest version of Norton or McAfee AV programs for a
reduced price after rebates.
