XP screen and welcome message not centered on monitor

Suddenly I noticed that when I open up windowsXP home, the "WindowsXP"
screen image is off-center to the right and down slightly. Same with
the "Welcome" Message that follows. Interestingly it's on the heels of
another problem that developed, though I'm not sure at all they're
related, namely, everything freezes up. I mean FREEZE - after leaving
the machine idling for a long period of time, hour plus. Nothing,
NOTHING can get me out except a reboot. CAD is useless. Doesn't happen
all the time, but it is becoming an issue and I'm hoping something
serious is not about to happen. A reboot brings things back okay.

Ideas?

You can adjust the horizontal and vertical positions on the front of the
monitor, if it isn't a laptop. You do this for each resolution..
