XP restarts every time I shut down

Following some m/s updates, I can not long shut down my computer. It
automatically restarts and boots up.

I do not have any Roxio products or Easy Creator CD s/ware.

I have turned off the option of auto restart on error in My
Computer/Properties.

I have checked my bios options and don't have any power-management
conflicts.

I have gone to the knowlege base, but none of the solutions apply to my
problem....or as best I can tell

Try a System Restore to a point before the ms/updates.

I tried that and it reset initially. Then I installed the critical updates
and the problem started up again, but this time I had no point to do a System
Restore.

Still just restarts on shutdown.
