XP Repair

I'm trying to repair an XP Pro installation but can't seem to get there from
here. I get initial setup screen, type R for repair and it brings me to
recovery console and C:\Windows. I thought there was a way to do a
repair-like-installation but may have taken the wrong option. If I take the
SETUP option on the initial screen, select the drive partition and press
ENTER to set up Windows, does that take me to the repair installation screen
or does it automagically go ahead with a fresh install?

All help greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

John, I checked link to MS but my bootup procs from CD is different from
version in KB. Mine goes:

Press key to boot fm CD

To set up XP now, press ENTER
To repair XP installation using Recovery Console, press R
To quit, press F3

Since I do not want to use Recovery Console, I press ENTER which brings up
EULA.
I press F8 and options are:
Set up XP, press ENTER
Create partition, press C
Delete partition, press D

I press ENTER and get I chose to install XP on partition containing another
O/S. Options are to continue SETUP press C and select different partition,
press ESC.

Some how I missed the Repair option (not recovery console version) or have I
not gotten there yet? If I press C to continue setup I get Setup Will Install
XP on Partition and lists partition I selected on previous screen.

Or if I go ahead with partition option does Repair option come up next or ???

With a repair installation basically what you do is (re)install Windows
"atop" of itself. If you are at the point where you need to do a repair
install you are getting close to the last of the available options
before you have to blow everything off the disk and do a clean install.
Boot with the CD and keep on going and select to install Windows in
the same folder as where it is now (usually C:\Windows), in other words
select to install XP on partition containing another OS and install in
the same folder, it should ask if you want to upgrade the OS that is
already there, select *yes* . *DO NOT* delete or format the partition!
Just install atop the old copy, selecting to upgrade if asked. Do you
have a backup of your personal files? You might want to make backup
before you proceed.
