XP Repair Install stops

Trying to repair an XP Home system. Blue screened several times. Finally
wouldn't boot at all. Used repair disc, recovery center, chkdsk - got to
point it would boot into safe mode, but no mouse (USB or PS2), no keyboard
(PS2), useless. Tried repair install. Gets to about 20%, then says it can't
copy the file. Won't copy any more files. Tried several more times with the
same result, but at different points. Never on the exact same file. DIR of
HD before I start says 8.8GB free. Haven't found any discussions of this
same problem. Anyone encounter this? Know the cause and fix? Do I need to
suck it up and do a clean install? Thanks.

What was the original problem?

I don't see any hardware diagnostic results here. Really, you are
wasting your time (and destructively, at that) if you barge into any
kind of "just" re-installing Windows if the hardware's bent.

I don't see any kind of virus scanning results here either, even the
weak approach of scanning from within infected Windows.
Tried repair install. Gets to about 20%, then says it can't copy the file.
Won't copy any more files. Tried several more times with the same
result, but at different points.

That randomness suggests flaky RAM or other hardware issue.

Read http://cquirke.mvps.org/reinst.htm - your case is one of the most
extreme ones that would prompt me to write that page.
