XP regisrty restore problem

W

an XP registry import was started by mistake to an XP sytem and
stopped 1/4 of the way through . The system boots to the Dell wall
paper, and the profile login screen. The selected profile will not
load and the Dell wall paper remains. I can run programs and see all
the data and applications by running task manager. I can even run some
programs. But I have no desktop with icons..Just wall paper. No back
up of the registry was made. First, Does XP make a *.bak file of the
registry elements? and second How do I get the Desktop back, Third and
more importantly, what is the best way to solve this Problem!

Try System Restore using a restore point before the mistake was made,
You may need to turn certain features in your anti-virus and / or your
anti-spyware to get system restore to work. How you do that depends on
what you are using.

Use the System restore tool since the restore points contain a snapshot
of the registry as well. Start > Run:
%windir%\System32\Restore\rstrui.exe
