XP recovery no boot

I have a T2200 emachine with XP preinstalled. Had a
problem so tried the XP recovery disks. Recovery disks
appeared to load the sysstem - told me it had - but the
system will not boot. I get "An error loading system
error."

My guess is the boot sector has been overwritten and the
recovery disks do not replace it.

Any one have any ideas ?

If my understanding is of recovery disks is correct, in
that they overwrite the drive so you lose all the data on
t, why not just format the harddrive and do the reovery
agagin. Any bad sectors will be taken care of during the
format.
