XP Recovery Issue

I completed a recovery of my system (Win XP) and now I am unable to load
programs from CD or even get the Windows update to work. I loaded the SP2
which didn't help. Any ideas?

PC vendor, model & Error messages (If any) would help. Broad or
generalized issues don't lend themselves to answers or even guesses.

How was SP2 applied ? Internet access type ?

HP Pavilion 763n. No error messages, programs just won't load. For example,
I insert the Norton Anti-Virus CD, the autorun starts but nothing happens
after I select install, even the install window goes away. Same with other
programs I've tried to reload. SP2 was received by a member here after I
posted the problem of not being able to get the windows update to work after
my recovery. I was able to click the link provided by a member and then
download the file from microsoft manually. This problem was going on before
I did the SP2 manually. I was hoping the SP2 might correct it.

Thanks.

If you connected to the Internet without first having a firewall in
place then your computer is probably infested with at least one
virus/trojan. The average PC will be infected within 30 seconds of
being connected unless there is a firewall present.

Try redoing the Recovery Disk install and then install Service Pack 2
from the CD before connecting to the Internet.

Good luck

For the Windows update problem, the windows automatic update service
may not be running. Go into admin tools/services and check to make
sure the automatic updates service is running. You need this service
running for Windows update to work even if you are not using auto
updates.
