Hi,

My computer is a couple of years old now and has filled up with all
sorts of unwanted stuff and become very slow in the process.....the
copy of windows is genuine, but I do not have a copy of the CD, is
there some way of making a copy from existing files on my hard-drive or
downloading off the internet a tool which would do that so i can
re-install a fresh copy on my laptop??

Many thanks for advice

If you have a factory-installed OEM installation of WinXP, consult the
laptop's manufacturer to determine how to use the recovery/restoration
method that specific OEM provided.

If you have a retail license for WinXP, you'll need the installation
CD. If you've lost it, purchase another.

Spend a few hours cleaning your system. Download, install and scan with a
couple of free anti-spyware programs. Window Defender (Beta 2) is excellent:

On this site click on Ad-Aware Personal: http://www.lavasoftusa.com/
Your Anti-virus program should find the other culprits. You do have one with
all the updates, don't you? If not, another free one:

Your browser may also have been hijacked.

1. Download hijackthis from http://www.hijackthis.de/
2. Install hijackthis on your C: drive.
3. Open the program and click on Do a system scan and save a logfile.
4. Save the logfile to your desktop.
5. Visit http://www.hijackthis.de/
6. Either copy and paste your logfile contents into the space provided, or
7. Click on the Browse button and locate your logfile.
8. Click on Analyze
9. Wait a few minutes and the results will be displayed.
10. Follow the instructions for the "Nasty" entries.

With the above programs, there will probably be no need to re-install.
