XP randomly shutting down.

Hi all

Can someone please help?
My pc for the last 2 weeks has been randomly shutting down.
It has shut down during boot and also up to an hour or so just totally
random.
I get no warning at all the pc just shuts down (crashes)
After it shuts down (crashes) I have to turn off the power at the socket so
I can
restart the pc as the power button on the front of the case is still green
and will not work?.

I have scanned for viruses with Norton AV but none wear detected.
I have checked for spy ware and all is ok.

My PC temp using WinBond Hardware Doctor as I type this is
System temp is 30.c
CPU temp is 33.c going up to a max of 43.c

System information
I have Windows XP Pro with (SP2 that was installed after the crashes
started).
Intel Pentium 4 CPU 2.40GHz
Mother Board Jetway Model : i845

Thanks in advance
David

Look in the Event Viewer for any clues.

Administrative Options>Event Viewer

or

start>run and type

eventvwr

Hi William
Thanks for taking the time to try and help me out.

I forgot to mention that there is nothing listed at or around the time of
the PC crashing in the Event Viewer.

Thanks

David,

Turn the option off to automatically restart. When the option is turned off,
a BSOD (Blue Screen of Death) might show some information. To do this, right
click on My Computer>Advance>Startup and Recovery Settings>then uncheck
"Automatically restart".

if the BSOD shows up, create a new post with the Stop Error Codes.

Hi William
Just had a look and it's already off
I am going to save and clear the Event Viewer logs so the next time it
crashes I have a clean slate

Thanks again as I am off to bed I will check the board tomorrow
All the best

Hi William

I went to turn on my pc today and got nothing no power at all.

Took out the power supply and plugged it into another pc's motherboard and
it was dead.
I have just installed a new power unit into the problem pc and am hoping
that the random crashing I was getting was a result off the faulty power
unit.

All the best
David

Yes that can do it too, I hope it works out for you. :)

David and WTC,

I am having the same problem and came to the same conclusion about my power
supply. However, after putting in a new power supply, I am having the same
problem. All temps are good, fans are operating normally, I've run
anti-virus checks, mailicious logic checks, PC diagnotics, etc. No luck.
David's comment about being very random is on the money for my computer. I
tried to narrow it down to a program but cannot.

David - how is your computer running?

WTC - any other recommendations?

Could really use an answer on how to solve this dilemna. My system has been
completely rebuilt with all new parts and power supplies. I went through the
same random shut downs, without any viruses or spyware issues. Need to know
if it has something to do with hardware or WINXP Home SP2 updates?
Help!

My pc is shutting itself off without warning...I have had my machine
completely
rebuilt 3x, everything replaced, and once again after a couple of months, it
begins to just shut off without warning. It is not specific to any program or
task. It will even shut off when no one is on it. All the power management
options are set to NEVER, yet it still just shuts off. I can turn it back on
without any problem, but no record is stored in the event viewer as to the
problem. I have no clue as to whether the problem is WINXP software or
hardware. Please advise...

I'm having the same shut down problem. So I decided it was time for a
bigger hard drive, and that would give me a clean install. I did use the
file and settings transfer in XP, and guess what...same shut down problems.
I'm hesitant to start over again, and reinstall everything because I'm not
sure if that will solve it. I can't find any common denominator to this
problem. It happens when the computer is sitting idle with no programs
open, or in the middle of a download, or virus check. Totally random. Any
other thoughts?

I'm beginning to believe it might be an overheating issue...I researched
several other "posts" and found the common denominator to be heat! I
thoroughly cleaned all the fans inside (power, video, processor, and 2
exhaust fans) and then left the side of the machine open. I ran an ABIT EQ
program that records the speeds and temp of the CPU and motherboard, etc. and
made a note of the current temp and max temp "before" shut off. Since then,
no problems...tomorrow I will talk with the pc company that built the system.
I also am now able to successfully run a complete virus scan on both hard
drives without it shutting off! (By the way, no viruses.) The only component
that hasn't been replaced on this system was the black metal case. Am going
to check into a cooling fan or alternate case if "heat" truly has been the
cause of the random shut downs. Good luck!
