XP Professional Installation Upgrade from XP Home

While installing the XP professional upgrade I recieve the following error,
which is entirely unfamiliar to me.

xsx.dll syntax error in manifest or policy file
H:\I386\asms\10\msft\windows\gdiplus\gdiplus.monon Line 4

Error Installation Failed
H:\I386\asns Error Message: Incorrect Function

Unfortuantly I cannot discontinue the installation as windows constantly
tries to continue setup upon reboot; however, I recieve this message
repeatedly. Any assisstance would be helpful.
Thanks
