I upgraded XP to Service Pack 1 from the Microsoft web-
site. On re-booting after installation (which appeared to
have been successful) XP does not start at all. All I get
is a black screen when I switch my PC on.

I've tried repair re-installing from the XP CD which
appears to work. But once I turn off the PC and re-start
I'm back to square one - a black screen.

Anybody has an idea on what the problem might be?

Thanks. Doesn't explain why I got the problem after the
Service Pack 1 update, and why the repair install doesn't
fix the problem. But then, this is Windows ...
