XP problem logging into NT network

J

Joe Hurst

I am administering a NT4 network & just recently installed a new XPsp1 PC.
Upon login, it takes over 2 minutes to actually log into the network.
During this time, only a blank desktop & a curser is displayed. Also I get
these two errors every time in the event viewer:

Event Type: Warning

Event Source: EventSystem

Event Category: (52)

Event ID: 4356

Date: 4/1/2004

Time: 11:44:02 AM

User: N/A

Computer: BHRTAG819

Description:

The COM+ Event System failed to create an instance of the subscriber
partition:{41E90F3E-56C1-4633-81C3-6E8BAC8BDD70}!new:{6295DF2D-35EE-11D1-870
7-00C04FD93327}. CoGetObject returned HRESULT 8000401A.

AND

Event Type: Error

Event Source: Userenv

Event Category: None

Event ID: 1054

Date: 4/1/2004

Time: 11:44:06 AM

User: NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM

Computer: BHRTAG819

Description:

Windows cannot obtain the domain controller name for your computer network.
(The specified domain either does not exist or could not be contacted. ).
Group Policy processing aborted.

I have other XPsp1 PCs on the network which do not have these problems.
I've double-checked & all of the network settings are the same on the
working PCs & the one with the problem. I have also followed KB289650 which
did not help. I tried manually setting the DNS but this also did not help.
The problem occurs regardless of what user I log in as.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

I'm getting the exact same event 4356 on an XP SP1 machine also, down
to the GUID sequences. I've noticed that the local Admin login is OK
but the user's login takes forever at applying Desktop settings.

However, I'm not seeing event 1054.

I'm still investigating. The problem PC is an IBM thinkcentre, P4 3
Ghz with hyperthreading enabled, Intel Pro 100/MT NIC.
