I realize that XP home is not able to join a domain but is there any
other limit to other networking useage by XP home machines? For
example can I have 10 XP home machines share a printer and a dsl
router just like windows 98 machines could? Share files and map drives
between all of them if required also?

Thanks

Windows XP Pro has 10, XP Home is limited to 5.

--EULA Info From Windows XP Pro--
"You may permit a maximum of ten (10) ("Connection Maximum") computers or
other electronic devices (each a "Device") to connect to the COMPUTER to
utilize the services of the SOFTWARE solely for File and Print services,
Internet Information services, and remote access (including connection
sharing and telephony services)"

You can share and map drives like normal(well it works different in xp, but
can be done). One limitation is XP home will only allow 5 concurrent
connection to it's shares/printers.

Thanks for the info, I knew there was some kind of limit.

Since they will really only print to the same printer sporatically
can I assume that as long as 5 users don't try to print to the same
shared printer at the same time then everything should be okay then
for casual printing? They don't map to the printer.

I suppose leaving a windows 98 machine attached to the printer would
also solve the problem.

Chris:

Home cannot join a domain, but it works fine with most domain
resources/services.

I use Home in Win2k/Win2k3/SBS2k3 domains for the following:
DHCP
DDNS
WINS
Networking
VPN
Exchange sever 2k3
Have Home user's data file on a domain server
Printing

What Home cannot do:
Query AD
Receive domain GPO

thanks - it sounds like we are okay then with XP home. We just use
them more like terminals and they access databases using internet
explorer and they run terminal emulators to access unix servers.

thanks for everybody's help
