XP Pro Upgrade Edition Procedure for a wiped disk

Hello!

We just had a hard disk running Windows 2000 Professional go bad. I've had
to replace it with a new drive with no OS installed and I'm considering XP
Pro Upgrade Edition instead of 2000. Will I need to re-install 2000 Pro onto
the new disk for the Upgrade edition to recognize it, or will XP Pro simply
prompt me for the old 2000 CD to check, or ask for the reg key?

I don't particularly want to go through two full installs in a row if I can
help it :)

Thanks!

Hi Dave,

XP Setup will simply prompt you to provide proof of a previous qualifying
operating system, and you need only insert the install CD for that operating
system.......no need to install 2K and then upgrade to XP.

It's quite possible to perform a clean installation using the
Upgrade CD, provided you have the true installation CD for the earlier
OS.

Simply boot from the WinXP Upgrade CD. You'll be offered the
opportunity to delete, create, and format partitions as part of the
installation process. The Upgrade CD checks to see if a qualifying OS
is installed, and, if it finds none, it asks you to insert the
installation media (CD) of that OS. Unfortunately, an OEM
"Recovery/Restore" CD will not work for this purpose; you must have a
true installation CD, complete with the "\Win98" folder and *.cab
files, or the "\i386" folder of WinNT/2K.

You will be prompted to insert the 2k disk during setup. This has to be a
Windows CD and not restore media and it can be any Windows CD from 95 to
2000 for a clean install.

You boot from the CD and do a clean install.
