xp pro upgrade, cd-rw not working

to upgrade my pc i whiped my hardrive then installed
windows 98 and upgraded it to xp pro. Once upgraded, no
matter what cd i put in, i recieve, "E:\ not valid win32
application". I know the cd-rw is good because it was
needed to install xp. Any suggestions would be much
appriciated.

Don't install win98 first, then upgrade. Do a clean install of xp. Boot to
the xp cd and follow the on-screen instructions to format the drive and
install xp. At some point in the install it will ask for your win98 cd, put
it in to verify, then the install continues.
