XP Pro Stand By problem

John W. Russo

I've been running XP-Pro on a new P4 system since March
2003. Its a Matsonic MS9307C+(USB)MB w/Intel P4/2.4GHz,
1GB PC2700 DDR RAM, ACPI Keyboard, etc.
I've used the "Sleep" & "Wake-Up" keys on my keyboard for
months. I'm not sure when, but all of a sudden, Sleep does
nothing. If I look at "Power Options", the "When I press
Sleep what should Windows do" option and Hibernate are
gone! Theu used to be there. Also under Start... Turn Off
Computer... "Stand By" is grayed out. It used to work too!
I've looked everwhere I can think and can't find why
theese modes don't work anymore. I've checked CMOS too, ok.
Help... Thanks... John W. Russo

This has happened to MANY of us.

According to Maureen Goldman, video drivers could be the culprit.
And MS Updates generously offer them, whether you need them or not.
Have you done an update lately? Or added any new drivers?
Can you do a system restore, then add back Critical updates and any software
you lose in the Restore?

System restore doesn't list anything older than about a
week. I was having weird video problems with a SiS AG315P
then an ATI Radeon 7000, both 64MB AGP cards. The SiS
didn't like the screensaver or sleep, "infinite loop"
errors. I tried all updated drivers and they were worse! I
finally put back my original nVidia GeForce 2 MX200 32MB
AGP card and all problems gone. Except now no "Stand By",
sounds like one of those updates screwed things up! Since
I can't use system restore back far enough, what do you
suggest I try? Thanks... John
