XP Pro sp3 machine stops responding...

Howard Woodard

I am running a 4 month old custom built PC. It has an ASUS P5NSLI mobo, an
Intel E7200 dual core processor, 4 GB of DDR2, an EVGA GeForce 7800 GTX
video adapter, and a 500 GB Western Digital SATA II hard drive, all running
under XP Pro sp3. This build has been rock solid. It was set to go into
stand-by after an hour of no use and then to come out of it when the mouse
was moved. It has worked perfectly.

This past Saturday we had a power failure that was preceded by several hard
surges.

Afterwards the PC was still running -- it kept resetting the attached
scanner -- but the user interface was so slow that it could take up to a
minute for it to reflect a move of the mouse. I restarted it. It would
POST ok but it would re-boot each time that it attempted to start XP.

Finally I relented to the inevitable and reinstalled the OS. Everything
appeared to install and update flawlessly. After completing the setup I
used it for a couple of hours and it really zipped around.

The next morning the mouse would move and it would even select a desktop
icon if I double-clicked on it but it wouldn't start anything. In fact,
after clicking on several things even the mouse would quit responding.

The best that I can tell, it appears that I'm set up this time as I was
before. In fact, as long as the machine is asked to do something on a
regular basis it stays up and runs great. It's only when it's left to sit
idle for about 30 minutes or more that it goes into this mode. To get out I
have to power down and then power right back up. No errors are being
reported anywhere.

I changed the power options to never turn anything off but it hasn't made
any difference.

I've run diagnostics on the video card, RAM and the hard drive but haven't
had any errors reported.

I haven't found anything like this from anyone else on the net -- but I'm
not real great at technical searches, I get a lot of advertisements.

Has anyone seen or heard of this? If so, do you know what the fix is?

Thanks in advance,

Howard

Figure out what hardware got fried and replace it.
