Hello,

For some reason all of sudden my PC cannot see other WinXP machines in the
Network Neighborhood list. I can only access one Win98SE pc that is also on
the same network. Pinging the other XP pc's is successful. I've also tried
to access the other pc's network by typing in \\pcname in the Windows
Explorer address bar but no luck there either. I scanned the pc for adware
using adaware, spybot and spysweeper and a virus scan, no malware was found.

Any help would be very appreciated.

Thanks very much :-)

Thanks Carey. So far the settings look like shown in the link. I mentioned
that I'm using XP Pro, so I suppose there might be some extra network
settings there?

What I'll try doing is just removing some connections and let XP add them
again.

You say this happened all of a sudden. What changed? How is the network
structured - ethernet, wireless, cable/dsl modem with router? What
firewalls do you have in place. From your second post, we know that you
only have Service Pack 1 on the XP boxen. How many computers are on the
network? Is it a workgroup or are you on a domain?

There are no extra settings in XP Pro.

I'm not sure anything has changed. There are total of 5 pc's in the
workgroup. 4 computers running Winxp Pro Sp1 and one running Win98se, though
I suppose we can leave that 98 machine out of the picture for the time
being.

Strange thing though, I just tested to see if the other winxp computers can
see that winxp pc in question (call it workstation1) and they do see it. It
seems my pc is the only pc that does not see workstation1, whilst I do see
all the other XP pc's on the network. How is that I can't see that pc, while
the other users can, but I can see those users except that one pc. All that
points to is, seems someone may have been messing with the router settings,
which I will check soon.

A good way to troubleshoot network problems is to go through the network
troubleshooter by MVP Hans-Georg Michna here:

http://www.michna.com/kb/wxnet.htm

You need to answer all the questions carefully, but it is worth it. See
if that helps to pinpoint the problem and if you run into a wall, post
back with the results of the troubleshooter.

Thanks, that's an awesome site. I'll check it out right away.

btw, I should've also mentioned the error message, when typing in
\\computername in the address bar
this is what pops up

Windows cannot find '\\computername'. Check the spelling and try again, or
try searching for the item by clicking the Start button and then clicking
search.
