xp pro repair problems

I needed to run the repair option on my xp pro machine after problems
in which my system would not boot, all goes well until setup tells me
it is saving setup settings, it get about 75% and then the system
reboots, and then start install again.

I have ran chkdsk and identified and repaired any problems. Can
anyone offer any advice, I would just reinstall everythign after
format but there are some files, and my email in outlook express that
I need to retain.
