I had windows xp home edition installed on my pc when I purchased it
Since I wanted some extras I purchased on line the pro edition. I di
not know that it did not have a registration number or Key. Know I hav
sent for a CD that is Legitimate Microsoft Software.
My question is... When I install the new CD Will it remove all m
programs and files? Is there a way to keep all my information intac
when I install the new CD?
I tried to reinstall the original xp home edition but it is in
different partion so when I boot up I either choose to go to the "hom
edition" or the "pro edition". I have nothing in the "home edition" bu
really need to keep the "pro edition" without deleting all that I hav
and hopefully without having to reinstall all my programs which I don’
know if I still have.
Thanks for any help you can give.

Do a repair installation with the XP Pro (legitimate) disk:

Repair Installation of XP :
http://kgiii.info/windows/XP/general/xprepair.html

When you're done:

Start
Run
type "control folders" without the quotes
hit enter
Click on the view tab and show hidden files and protected files
Open C:\boot.ini with notepad
(make a backup copy of it named boot.txt)
Search at your favorite search engine for specifics and edit the boot.ini to
remove the second installation that you have

An example of what your boot.ini should look like (and some methods to get
you fixed up if this goes horrifically wrong) can be seen here:

You don't need to re-install anything, all you need to do is register the legitimate Product Key and you're all set to go.

first navigate to the following reg key

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\Current Version\WPAEvents

right click OOBETimer, and modify one of its digits (any it doesn't matter)

next open up run and type %systemroot%\system32\oobe\msoobe.exe /a

a box should pop up in it click yes, I want to telephone a customer service representative to activate Windows, and then click Next.

then click Change Product key, type the new product key in the new key boxes, and then click Update.

all done!!
