XP Pro on an NT Domain

Hi all,

I am trying to join a windows XP Pro to a Win NT 4.0 domain. I create the
device on the Server (from server manager) then try and add it but when we
do the restart after adding the workstation, we try and login and the
workstation does not see the domain. I am now locked out of the workstation
with no way to login.

In the event viewer, I see event id 5722 (NETLOGON) and the event text "The
session setup from the computer DOUGDAY failed to authenticate. The name of
the account referenced in the security database is DOUGDAY$. The following
error occurred:
Access is denied. "

DOUGDAY being the workstation name.

The DHCP server (same as the PDC) automatically assigns the NIC in the
workstation with an IP address but even after that we cannot ping the NIC
which is strange. What could be the problem?

By the way this is a laptop.

Grateful if any of you microsoft experts could offer some help.

Jodie:

What SPack are you using on NT?

Per MS: "If you deploy Windows XP Professional-based clients in a Microsoft
Windows NT 4.0-based domain, Microsoft recommends that all the Windows NT
4.0-based domain controllers run Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 6a (SP6a) or
later."

Yes I did.

Did you change the laptop from a workgroup to your domain? You stated that you
created the object on the domain but have you told the laptop to change to that
domain?

Right click My Computer and choose properties...Computer Name tab,

The NT server is currently running at SP6

Jodie:

MS recommends SP6a, not SP6
Run winver from a DOS session.
If you have SP6a installed, you will see:
2nd line will show "SP6"
4th line will show "Revised SP6a"

Focus on the IP addressing problem first.
Disable any firewalls on the XP computer (also check any f/w logs).
Run ipconfig /all on a domain member that can logon, and compare results
with the XP computer.

I cannot logon to the XP machine at all to do any sort of change or
troubleshooting and the server is SP6a

Jodie:

At bootup logon screen:
Enter Administrator in the User Name field.
Enter Administrator's password in the Password field.
Use the drop down menu to select "Dougday (This Computer)" in the Logon To
field.

Hopefully, you can now logon as a local user.

Now, focus on the IP addressing problem first.
Disable any firewalls on the XP computer (also check any f/w logs).
Run ipconfig /all on a domain member that can logon, and compare results
with the XP computer.
In particular, look at the values for the following:
DHCP Enabled
DHCP Server
IP Address
Subnet Mask
