Strange Shut down problem

C

I am completely stumped on this one.

network with 2 Intel motherboard XP SP3 O/S workstations and Windows 2003 SBS

One one workstation(main one), when the system is told to either shut down
or restart it will go through the shutting down screen to a blue screen and
just sit there. The mouse pointer is still on the screen and moves when the
mouse is moved. This only happens when logged into the domain. System shuts
down fine if:
-logged in local or in safe mode with networking
- if network cable is unplugged on power up and using domain loggin.
- if NIC is not assigned an ip from DHCP
- if NIC is turned off in BIOS

Motherboard has been replaced.

I have tried the following:

Updated all drivers.
Turned off Audio, usb, firewire in BIOS
Direct wire to server
Updated server (Svr2003) Drivers and BIOS
removed all programs not used
uninstalled CA Anti-Virus suite 2009

2nd workstation is identical to first and shuts down fine 90% of time. On
occasion does samething as 1st workstation.

That's all I can think of for now.

Almost seems to be an issue with the NIC drivers. Can you disable the
NIC and install a separate NIC card for testing?

Are you running any scrips at logoff as a GPO? The machine is terminating
processes & clearing caches

Terry said to check your NIC drivers but that wouldn't cause this issue
becuase if it was the NIC then it would do things on boot-up & normal domain
usage too. Also obtaining a DHCP address if it's set.

What is the domain login time like for this machine? Roaming profiles?

No loggoff scripts.
No roaming profiles
Loggin to domain is up to speed (fast)

NIC drivers doesn't make sense. They would cause issues even when not logged
into the domain if the were bad. Plus I replaced them totally with current
drivers.

I didn't recommend messing with drivers at all. I said to use a
completely different NIC to see if the issue persists.

If there was a problem with the NIC, the motherboard replacement would have
taken care of that.

The 2nd workstation is identical and works.

If you don't want to t-shoot it completely, fine. In your own words,
"...shuts down fine 90% of time. On occasion does samething as 1st

So obviously it doesn't "work" all the time. If you have 2 IDENTICAL
MB's doing the same thing, look elsewhere. That's what I suggested.

Maybe you haven't done extensive t-shooting before.

No need to get rude Terry R. I have been on the phone with Intel doing
extensive diagnostics. I am well past NIC issues. I have high end NIC
diagnostics software. For jollies I switched the NIC with no difference in
the issue. I am trying to explore other possibilities without doing a
reinstall from scratch.

I have been doing this for 20 years. When I get stuck, the issue is very
hard to diagnose.

Wasn't being rude at all. Too many times in these groups, users will
ignore suggestions and sometimes weeks later they "discover" what was
suggested early on. You did finally try another card, so you can take
that off the table at least.

I too have been doing this for over 20 years. Times like this get the
gears clogged up.

I would like to hear whether a reinstall resolves it, since you have it
happening on two workstations with the same MB, and even a replacement
MB has the issue. I had a similar issue with two built workstations
years back with the same ASUS boards. I finally replaced them with a
newer model (similar chipsets so a reinstall wasn't necessary) and the
issue cleared up.

Good luck. Report back if you discover what it was.
