Hi, I'm trying to get my reg key for XP-PRO. It's a legit
disk but I can't install the thing as FTDISK.SYS is
corrupted on the CD.

I need a prog that will get my key off the disk (no-one
panic, it's got the holograms etc). I have keys that get
it from an installation, but that's no good as I can't
install it.

I can install a friends XP HOME (I'm using it now...ooops!)
Then I can upgrade - but I lost the Key....yeh I know it
said put it somewhere safe etc, hell this is the year 2003
and my only copy is on a paper disk cover???

feel free to mail me, unless it's processed ham

you can find your product key by going into my computer,
right clicking and going to properties. Then it should be
under the General Tab

Then you have not done it since Windows 95.
After Windows 95 all you get is the Product ID, no way to make a
Product Key from a Product ID.

Assuming that the OS is operable on that machine . . .

Go to www.aida32.hu and DL AIDA32, a free utility that will tell you a ton
of info about the computer it is run on. Run it and print out the License
page which will have your PK for WinXP and many other SW packages installed
on that machine. Put the paper away somewhere safe for future reference.

If the OS is NOT operable/installed, the advice by Jupiter Jones is your
only solution short of buying a new copy.

Greetings --

The Windows 25-character Product Key (required to perform the
installation) is stored on the CD packaging on a bright orange sticker
that says "Do not lose this number." If it was an OEM (factory
installed) license, it's stored on a holographic label that the PC
manufacturer is supposed to affix to the exterior of the PC case, or
on the bottom of a laptop. The Product Key is _not_ stored on, nor is
it in any way extractable from, the installation CD.

To recover a lost Product Key:

If your system still runs, you should be able to use AIDA32
Enterprise from http://www.aida32.hu/aida32.php to find the Product
Key. (If you have a factory-installed OEM license, and haven't since
reinstalled the OS, the revealed Product Key is probably of the drive
image used at the factory and not _your_ specific Product Key;
therefore, it probably cannot be -- and definitely should not be --
used for a re-installation.)

If it was a retail license and you have proof of purchase:

If it was an OEM license, you should contact whomever sold you the
OS; although very few manufacturers/vendors keep records of the
Product Keys they've sold, it's worth a try before you have to buy a
new license.
