What proof do you have *now* that it is legitimate?

Is Windows XP installed an working on the system you upgraded?

If so - use something like Belarc Advisor or Magic JellyBean KeyFinder to
get the key of the functioning machine.

The computer is a HP machine which is very old and has a recovery disk to Win
98. I have recovered the machine to this operating system and now would like
to upgrade again to win XP. However I have lost the product code. I have read
somewhere that if I activated and registered the copy of windows, microsoft
can issue another key for a small charge. Is this possible? DOes anyone know
the number to call?

Many Thanks,
Rob.

As far as I know - there is no such thing. The 'small charge' is basically
(I would assume) the full price of the OS - if such a thing does exist. I
could be incorrect - but without proof (still have the invoice for the
purchase?) - there's not much anyone could do for you.

After all - it is not difficult AT ALL to get a copy of the CD... It's the
CD Key that matters.

Microsoft has no idea you activated/registered by now. (Nor did they likely
ever have a long-term record of it.) If you had just lost the media
itself - you might be able to use this method:

I bet - but unfortunately in this case - you might be misplacing your
annoyance if you are annoyed at Microsoft.

The unique part of the Windows XP licensing is not really the CD (although
there is some uniqueness by version and license type) but by the unique CD
Key for said media. A lot of people like to compare it to a house or car
(and the key to said item) but truthfully it is not like that. What you
really paid for - the meat - is the license (right to use) and the key (what
gives *you* the right to use) itself - the software is just gravy. The part
you need to keep the most secure and diligently backup is the CD Key. You
can likely get another CD someplace - whether from Microsoft or from a
friend/family member/acquaintance...

If you bought the upgrade version - that came in a CD case - so you lost the
whole CD case?
(Usually the Product Key is printed on a sticker on the CD Case.)
