XP Pro Installation over Win 2000 pro

I am trying to install XP Pro in a D600 Laptop. When I
run the XP CD is telling me to select the partition where
I want it. I have FAT 32 8GB free and NTSC where the Win
2000 is currently, so I select that one. It says that, if
I perform this installation over Win 2000 may not work
correctly. How and where should I install it? this is a
brand new Laptop (never use) I bought from a friend.
Thanks for you help.

Apparently, you acquired an "OEM Version" of Windows XP.
OEM versions cannot upgrade an existing Windows installation. Only
"retail versions" can upgrade. Either purchase a retail version of Windows XP
or reformat your drive to install the OEM version "clean".

If Windows 2000 is never going to be used, then delete
everything that is on the laptop, re-partition the HD
for a single NTFS particion and install Windows XP on
to that partition.

The delete action is easy to do it, the problem is I do
not know how to do the re-partition. Please help. I am a
beginner. thanks

For that you need to be able to boot the XP CD. Laptops sometimes need
a program that they supply with the installed system to allow you to
change boot order to CD before HD; some allow a regular hot key as you
boot. Consult its manual.

You have two choices: If this is a regular XP CD and *not* one of the
OEM ones referred to, run it *from* the Win2000 system, enter Install
and do an Upgrade. that will replace the Win2000

Or (you will have to do it this way if it *is* an OEM CD): Boot the XP
CD direct. Enter Setup, and after the license agreement take New
Install. When it asks you to confirm where, hit ESC; select and delete
the current partition and make a new RAW one to be formatted at the next
stage
