XP Pro cannot see NT server

I'm new to XP and am setting up some new PCs in our church, which has an
NT4 server using a domain. Server IP is 10.0.0.1. I set the XP IP to
10.0.0.100 with the same subnet mask. I cannot even ping the server or a PC
running ME. All are connected through a SOHO switch. The XP by default set
itself up with the default workgroup name. I wouldn't have thought I would
need to move it into the domain or need DNS just to ping by IP, but is that
the case?

I don't really have a need for the domain. We've only got 10 PCs so a PTP
workgroup setup should be fine and all PCs but one will be moved to XP Pro
in the next few weeks.

Thanks!

"with the same subnet mask."

That is?

Also make sure you are disabling the XP firewall. It may filter out ICMP
messages generated by "ping" or "tracert".

That is?

255.255.255.0

The PCs being replaced run ME and can connect fine, of course.
Also make sure you are disabling the XP firewall.

It's not enabled (or at least is not checked when I go into the advanced
tab of network properties).
