XP Pro cannot ping other machines

I'm new to XP and am setting up some new PCs in our church, which has an
NT4 server using a domain. Server IP is 10.0.0.1. I set the XP Pro IP to
10.0.0.100 with the same subnet mask (255.255.255.0). I cannot even ping
the server or a PC running ME. All are connected through a SOHO switch. I
can ping 127.0.0.1. The cable should be fine (worked on the PC it
replaced and the link LED is on the NIC and the switch).

The XP by default set itself up with the default workgroup name. I
wouldn't have thought I would need to move it into the domain or need
DNS/WINS just to ping by IP, but is that the case?

All PCs but one will be moved to XP Pro in the next few weeks, but the
server will remain NT4 with a possible upgrade to 2000 in the future.

Thanks!

Michael,

You are correct, you should not need to be on the same domain to ping
the server. The obvious statement of the day is that it looks like we
have a connection issue between the NT 4.0 Server and the XP Pro
client. Can you ping other clients or is the Server the only system
that cannot be seen?

Nobody can ping the XP clients (though I noticed the workgroup name I
created for them showed up while browsing on a 2000 client - it couldn't
open it of course). The XP clients can't ping anything, including each
other, which really baffles me.

For some history, we had an NT server (using a domain), a 98 client and 3
ME clients (at least one of which dual-boots to 2000) connected via an 8-
port switch (AOpen AOW-608). I've replaced 2 of the clients with new Dell
XP Pro PCs. The other 2 clients still work fine, but will also be replaced
as soon as I figure out how to get XP to talk to everything.

No DNS or gateway server is specified since that is the way the other
machines are. IPs are statically assigned (no DHCP) on all machines. I
would think all I would need to ping a machine is to load TCP/IP, which you
can't even get rid of in XP, put in an IP and subnet mask that matched the
rest of the network and goto the DOS prompt and ping. I'm clearly
forgetting something though. The network connection status window shows
packets going out, but 0 coming in. ICF isn't enabled.

Something is obviously stopping packets from coming in, but not going
out. Do you have any other firewalls installed(may be a stupid
question, but I have to ask).

Also, can you ping the NIC loopback address(127.0.0.1). Can you ping
your own IP address? Can other machines ping your IP address?

Not that I'm aware of. The XP machines came straight from Dell. I unloaded
McAfee and Norton. We've never been on the Internet so I don't see why the
NT server would have anything like that, but I'll look harder.

I can ping 127.0.0.1 and the machine's IP, but nothing else. Nothing else
can ping the machine.

The switch doesn't have any switches or software configuration from the
manual I got off the website. Simply plug everything in and go. It had been
working fine for the clients that were replaced.

Hence, I'm totally baffled.
