xp pro 64 sp2 - doesn't like KB961260

applied this update called Cumulative Service Update for IE. Upon next boot,
nothing works, can't even get the start button to work, only thing in system
tray is sound, icon is frozen hourglass, under safemode for that session the
event viewer in system shows the following drivers would not load: afd,
amdk8, fips, ipsec, mrxsmb, netbios, rasaid, robss, shldflt, tcpip, vmm,
wszifsl.

boots in safe mode - checked for virus, but nothing via panda, onecare,
onecare safety scanner, malicious software removal tool.

today tried removing the last updates KB961260 and KB960715 in safe mode,
and everything works again...

any ideas why this fix would kill all my drivers. afd reported someting
like a device attached to this system is not working.

this is a dual boot machine, xp pro64 and vista ultimate 32. it still
worked fine under vista, so i don't think it was a hardware problem, but very
curious how i backout the last update and everything works again.. but i hate
to turn off automatic updates..

Hi Pete,

Can't go back a restore point, it's a dual boot system, so it doesn't keep
restore points, each time you boot it wipes them out on either side, the xp
pro64 side and the vista ultimate 32 side.

so question remains. how can i apply this update without losing my system.

Thanks
Mike

Here is an update to the issue:
1. removed KB961260, remove and reinstall Panda IS 2008. everything works
fine.
2. added KB961260 - everything broke again upon reboot.
3. removed KB961260 - still broken upon reboot
4. removed Panda IS 2008 - works again, until reboot, then broken again.
5. removed Panda IS 2008 - works again, but no virus protection, and no
KB961260.
6. installed Avast! 4.8 - works again, reboot, still works. full scan
reveals win32:adware-gen(adw) on jfilogo.exe in flightsim9.
Still have to try the reinstall of KB961260 with Avast, now I think the
issue is with the combination of Panda IS 2008 and this rollup fix.. no time
or patience to try Avast and the KB961260, maybe monday..

Followup:
1. unistalled KB961260 and KB960715. uninstall panda is 2008 via safe
mode.
2. reboot normally, everything comes up.
3. installed Avast! 4.8, reboot, still working
4. installed KB961260 and KB960715, reboot, still works
5. third reboot, this is where panda breaks the system, but Avast!
working fine.

Conclusion: some issue with Panda IS 2008 and these updates. I will stick
with Avast! for now, at least i can apply the updates from microsoft.

P.S. - had a similiar situation a couple months ago with XP pro 32 and Zone
Alarm AntiVirus, they had to fix the product and issue an emergency fix,
wonder if Panda will have to do the same. Really bizzare..

Hi,

I appreciate your time and effort.

It seems that this two updates is incompatible with the Panda software.
Please understand Microsoft releases updates to fix known issues and
increase the stability and security of Windows XP, and we have tested as
much of the software environment as we could to improve the performance of
updates. However, we cannot guarantee that updates can install perfectly in
all computers because every computer has different software and hardware
environments. Sometimes updates can be incompatible with certain
third-party products. Thank you for your understanding.

Now as Avast! 4.8 works with these two updates, I suggest continuing using
this anti-virus program. If you have any other concern about this issue,
please feel free to let me know.

Sincerely,
Tim Quan
