After SP2, can only boot in safe mode

B&C

I'm using a HP desktop with Windows-XP Home Edition. After installing SP2
from the MS Update download site[around 70MB] the computer shows the HP
Logo, then shows the XP Windows logo a couple of seconds & then boots off,
asking if I want to start up in Safe Mode. Safe Mode will start the PC up
(showed SP2 version).

I went to the windows add/remove program, and removed the SP2 update.
Restarted the PC with the same results. having to start in Safe Mode (the PC
showed SP1 version). I went to the HP site and made sure I had all their
updates, and did the SP2 update with the Network Installation Package
[266MB] with still the same bad result.

I have a program from HP: "PC Doctor for Windows XP" - in which under
System, Event Viewer, error properties, one of the error reports state: The
following Boot-Start Driver(s) failed to Load:

ATMhelpr - Fips - i8042prt - Processor. Another error report states the
same but also contains these other ones: AFD - IPSec - MRxSmb - NetBT -
RasAcd - Rdbss - Tcpip - WS21FSL. I don't know, but guess one is the
initial start-up trial, and the other smaller list could be the Safe Mode
start-up.

I did load the SP2 on a HP Laptop, with XP-Media Center, without any known
problems!

I'm not a computer whiz, know about enough to be dangerous. Would
appreciate any help with this. THANKS.

SP2 is around 262Mb, that 70Mb means it's probable you
did not complete the process, In safe mode got to
accessories / system tools and see if you can do a system
restore, I have never tried that and not sure restore
will operate from Safe Mode

Not the first try... but checking the HP BIOS update, mine had already been
updated. I perform MS Windows Update, whenever an update is available.

Did you update BIOS and drivers prior to SP2 install?

The 260+Mb is the Network Installinon package...which I performed from on
the second try. An individual install from Windows Update runs around the
70MB, which I did the first try. - That's my understanding anyway.

Since HP and Compaq machines are so proprietary, it would probably be
a good idea to check with their support first to see if they sanction
the installing of SP2. You're probably going to have to run the HP
recovery program in order to get back to where you were before
installing SP2. Make sure before attempting another upgrade on the HP
that you have a complete backup of everything.

I recommend and use True Image from www.acronis.com to make the backup
but you can use Drive Image, Ghost (www.symantec.com) or any other
imaging program to make the backup.

Regards and good luck.

if you don't mind re-formatting your drive try using fdisk /mbr from a boot
floppy BEFORE you format the drive. I had a machine that would not boot after
XPSP2 and would then blue screen while trying to re-install XP. Had to use
this /MBR switch to remove the HAL from the SP2 install ,,,, thanks alot

He got it from Windows Update. That only downloads what components are
needed for the specific machine, and 70MB is normal enough on a well up
to date Home system

But people with HP machines should consult specific advice on SP2 at the
HP site
