XP Printing and Firewall

I have just installed XP Pro. Made the switch from 98SE. Everthing works
very well. All of my old files and programs transfered and installed without
problems. The only issue is with my Canon printer which I think is not a
Canon problem but an XP problem. The printer is setup as a local printer on
a USB local port. When I want to print something, Zone Alarm pops up stating
that MPservice.exe (the Canon software) Implements the NT service that
starts the server wants to connect to the internet zone (not the trusted
zone), the specific destination is IP 68.168.240.5:53 DNS
nscache2.clvdoh.adelphia.net. Spooler subsystem App wants the same. The
printer will not print unless I grant the connection to the internet.
Adelphia is my ISP. I have an HP local printer setup on USB0001 Virtual
printer port for usb that does not require the above services to be
connected to the internet to function properly. This is the same setup that
I had with Windows 98SE and it worked the way it should, without connecting
to the internet. I have been to the Canon web site and it states that
firewalls need to be configured for these sevices to be connected to the
internet to function properly. I talked to Canon support and they could not
tell me how to install to a USB virtual printer port like the HP, which I
think might solve the problem. Any ideas? Thanks JP

Canon MultiPass Service. This service is installed by the
Windows NT4/2000/XP drivers for Canon MultiPass
multifunctional printers.

Recommendation :
Some versions of the drivers have a buggy MPSERVICE which
either consumes excessive amounts of CPU (up to 100% even!)
or which shuts down complaining of a "conflicting device"
or "device in use". If you experience such a problem
download the latest drivers and that should cure the
problem. Note : to either uninstall the MultiPass driver,
or to upgrade it, you need to first stop the MPSERVICE
service or you will not be able to uninstall or upgrade.

I updated the drivers to the latest and applied the patch and I also did a
Google search for every combination of words relating to my problem. One of
those searches lead me to the page you posted. I read and applied the
information from it and many many others. Thanks anomnymous. JP
