Folks:

XP Home running fine for well into a year+. This evening, with an HP
Deskjet 720C connected (that has been working for a month+), a Spooler App
error msg popped up (to send to MS). 'Xd' out this msg (to MS) to clear it.

Cannot print. Did a File/Print - nothing, no printers there. Fax printer:
gone. Adobe Distiller Printer: Gone.

Went to Install Printer: nothing there.

Went to Add a Printer, Error msg reads: "Operation cannot be completed".

Powered down (hard). Rebooted. No printer. No ability to install.

At one point under Control Panel, Printers: the complete list of printers at
one time connected flashed ON then OFF, all gone.

Hardware list shows LPT1 as active. (No USB devices connected).

Hopefully I am being clear. Pls, what went wrong?

Best Regards,
Wayne Dengel

Specifically, if there is a difference, msg reads: "Spooler Subsystem App"
problem.

Pls read scenario below -or- does msg above tell you immediately what is
going on?

New Info: Under Ctl Panel, at this moment, list of printers is displayed.
However, clicking on any one, msg reads: "print spooler service not
running".

Shot in the dark here.

Start-->Run-->Services.msc

Scroll down to PrintSpooler and check status. If it shows 'disabled', right
click and choose 'start'

May work........

Cari:

Went to bed last night hoping for a reply as you did. Machine was not
turned off. Spooler problem (temporarily?) disappeared. Printer working
fine.

Spooler msg was aperiodic over past few weeks, then the 'crash'.

Do you have any idea what (seemingly) pulled it together last night?

Best Regards and Thank You for your reply.
Wayne

Good Moring David:

See my reply to Cari above. Meanwhile, I did as you suggested. Thank You.
Spooler shown 'Started'.

So be it!

Wayne

If it's set to Automatic in Services, and fails, XP will try to restart it
again - usually 3 times. Seems as it did this and was successful.
