Printing problems

I cannot install a printer onto my computer. I keep getting the message
"Operation could not be completed. The print spooler is not running". I
tried a fix for the problem, but nothing is working. I even tried to install
a different printer and I am still getting that message. How do I fix this?

Open a run command and type in:

net stop spooler Click [OK]
net start spooler Click [OK]

Reboot your machine, doe sit help to reinstall your new printer?
Also, do you use the CD or let windows discover the Driver for the printer
from the provided by windows.

Did you uninstall a printer recently and what is it?

The print spooler according to my admin tools is started, but I keep getting
the message "print spooler is not running". Also, my installed printer has
disappered. I can't even add a new printer.

I don't have the CD, I usually let Windows discover the driver for the
printer. I did not uninstall a printer. My printer that was installed just
"disappeared". The printer that I was using was a Compaq IJ750 color inkjet.

It is always best if you installed the Printer manufacturer driver which
will support the printer.

What printer you want to install now?
If you restart the Spooler what you get?

The driver for this printer seems to windows 2000.
Right click " My Computer" Iconm and select properties.
On the System Properties click on Hardware tab then on Device Manager Button.
On Device manager scroll down to Universal Serial Bus controllers and expand
it by expanding the plus [+] to [-] to see the tree of usbs ports and USB hub.

One will be called USB Printing Support, right click it and see if it will
give what printer/Device is using it!

To Show Printers and Fax. Right Click on the Start Button >> Select
properties then click on Customize Start Menu and click on Advanced Tab and
scroll down to this check box and check it:
Printers and Faxes click [Ok] then [OK] again to exit the taskbar and
start menu Properties window.

Can you see the Printers and Faxes now?

I tried to install the HP LaserJet 4 Plus printer. I started the spooler and
the Compaq IJ750 came up as the printer, but it disappeared again! I tried
your next suggestion but when I got to the USB Controllers there was a
Standard Enhanced PCI to USB Host Controller, Standard Open HCD USB Host
Controller and 3 USB Root Hubs and all showed that the devices are working
properly. Which one is the printer? The printers & faxes is still showing
"print spooler service is not running"!

The problem will apply for all printers, and possbly isn't related to any
specific driver. It looks like a lower level Windows print service.

For test purposes, use the Generic Text-Only Printer, set to FILE, and do
test prints to that.

If that doesn't work, the problem is not with hardware or your printer
drivers.

What happens if you stop and restart the service? Watch carefully for
error messages.

BTW, this kind of thing can indicate a subtle and potentially time-consuming
problem. You may have problems with service permissions, for example.

What other problems have cropped up with the system? Have you run any
"diagnostic" or "repair" software, such as registry cleaners?

Your OS is XP, right?

Looking at my XP Pro SP3 machine, if I right click the Print Spooler
service and Properties, the RPC service is listed (Remote Procedure
Call (RPC)) as a dependency. The RPC service should be running and
set to automatic. It probably is, but if not, try to start it. Make
sure both are both running and set to start automatically.

Start with the basics - get the Print Spooler service running
automatically. Try a reboot and make sure when Windows starts, the
service starts. Nothing regarding printers (especially trying to add
one) is going to work right until that happens.

If the Print Spooler is not running, you will not see anything listed
in the Printers and Faxes box. When the service starts, the installed
devices will magically appear. Right?

Running "net start spooler" will start the service, but will not set
it to automatic. You need to set it to automatic in the Services
dialogue. If you start the services that way and reboot, it is broken
again.

Lets try to get the part of getting the Print Spooler working properly
first.

Start it, set it to automatic, stop it, start it again, reboot and be
sure it starts...

I hate to say it, but try to be sure your system is free of viruses,
malware, etc. by running whatever you run with the latest database
updates for it.

Once we get the Print Spooler running reliably on a reboot Check your
Printers and Faxes. Is your printer there? Try to add a printer (you
can cancel it). Cancel and add again. Does this work reliably? Does
the Print Spooler keep running?

Let's see what that does for you.
