XP ntoskrnl.exe failure on boot

This is the message I get when Windows should start up.

"Windows could not start because the following file is
missing or corrupt: <Windows root>\system32\ntoskrnl.exe.
Please re-install a copy of the above file."

This happens after the PC has been turned off for awhile.
Repearted boot attempts will get Windows started and
everything runs fine. Not a problem when PC is warm or if
I re-start the PC within a few minutes after shut down.

Please advise.
