XP not recognizing USB devices as devices

I've got a Dell Dimension 4550, currently running XP. Digital camera & Ipod
were working fine, then with autopush of XP Service Pack 2, Xp is not longer
recognizing anything plugged into the USB ports as devices. I can see them
as drives in Explorer, and am not receiving any errors, but they do not show
up in the device manager (actually nothing does - the device manager is
completely empty.) Also am not getting 'Safely Eject Hardware Device' icon.
Both the camera and both Ipods (2) are confirmed functioning correctly.

Have subsequently uninstalled SP2, and no change. Still cannot detect these
as devices. Would appreciate any insight. Thanks!

Thank you for the tip. I just followed your instructions and unfortunately,
stopping and restart the Plug and Play device hasn't seemed to solve the
problem.
